In this panel, three farmers will delve into the nuances of grassfed grazing, discussing methods, viewpoints, and financials. Matt Rales of Turtle Island Ag raises grass-finished beef in Northern VirginiaRidge Shinn runs a grassfed beef production in Massachussetts, co-founded Hardwick Beef, and develops markets and distribution systems for 100% grass-fed beef throughout the northeast. Jessica Gigot of Harmony Fields in Washington State raises grassfed sheep for roving, meat and cheese, and educates the public on diversified resilient farming methods. Together these successful farmers will examine the benefits of grassfed grazing, including carbon sequestration and farmland rejuvenation, animal health, quality and nutrition of product, husbandry, financial return and quality of life for the farmer.

Jessica Gigot is a poet, farmer and teacher. She owns and operates Harmony Fields, a small, organic farm in Bow, WA that grows herbs, specialty produce and raises sheep. She has a background in horticulture, plant pathology and creative writing. Jessica conducts educational workshops and college level classes related to food systems. Her first book of poems, Flood Patterns, was published by Antrim House Books in 2015.

Ridge Shinn is an expert in 100% grass-fed beef production and marketing. He started the New England Livestock Alliance (NELA); co-founded Hardwick Beef; and started the Rotokawa Cattle Co. which imported the Rotokawa Devon herd (100 head) from New Zealand to the US.
